Learn Podcast Insights From the Pros
We certainly hope you like hearing directly from us at Wavve, but we thought some of our successful customers have plenty more to share. We’re starting a series where we feature pro podcasters and their stories, so that you can learn from the best in the business. Our first is Amber De La Garza.
Give us the details. What’s your podcast about? How long have you been doing it? How many episodes have you published?
My team and I have published more than 340 weekly episodes of Small Business Straight Talk since 2017. The show is about teaching effective business, time management, and productivity strategies to small business owners so they can maximize profits, reduce stress, and make time for what matters.
Every Monday, my expert guests and I deliver the straight talk on productivity, time management, business systems, leading your team, strategic decision making, mindset, and other business topics of interest with the aim of helping listeners grow their business with more joy.
Why did you decide to start a podcast?
I originally started podcasting because I had an epiphany that I absolutely hated blogging and needed a new marketing platform to share my strategies for business growth with the world.
I tried podcasting on for size and it was a perfect fit because it allowed me to speak freely on topics I love, deliver actionable strategies to get results and succeed in business, and connect with other small business owners across the globe – without all the necessary punctuation, grammar, and transitional phrases required in blogging.
What’s the biggest hurdle you face regularly in creating your podcast? How do you overcome it?
The challenge of creating new, original content every single week. I’ve overcome that challenge time and again by seeking inspiration in my daily life and client coaching sessions. If one of my clients is struggling with a particular problem, it’s likely that many of my listeners are facing a similar problem or will in the future. So, I create an episode that discusses that topic at length or bring an expert on to discuss solutions to that problem if it’s not in my wheelhouse.
Another way I overcome the challenge of creating content is recycling a topic that has already been discussed but presenting it with a fresh perspective to make it valuable for my audience and hit home in a different way.
What’s the biggest reward you get from your podcast?
I’m really passionate about helping small business owners improve their time management, elevate their productivity, and make the right strategic decisions so they can run their business better and be less stressed.
Podcasting has granted me the opportunity to influence a huge group of small business owners all over the world that I never would have had the chance to reach otherwise. I’ve also had the incredible honor of coaching many of my listeners, building relationships with them, and partnering with them in their business success.
It feels amazing to help other business owners go from overwhelmed and exhausted to joyfully running a profitable business. Their testimonies of positive change mean the world to me.
Are there any other podcasting insights you’d like to share?
I have been blown away by the personal and professional growth I’ve experienced while podcasting. Consistently creating new and valuable content has forced me to become even more of an expert in my field and more knowledgeable about business topics that were not originally in my forte. Also, many of the strategies I’ve learned from my guests have been game-changing.
Also, I can geek out about business topics I love for hours because I’m so passionate about them, therefore an unexpected challenge has been having to reel it in for shorter episodes even though I have a ton to say on the topic.
What is your favorite podcast/YouTube/Newsletter to listen to (besides yours)?
I’m a loyal fan of the Grace & Grit Podcast. The host Courtney has ignited something in me that serves as a huge motivator to prioritize my mental, emotional, and physical health in this stage of my life. She always offers a fresh perspective and new viewpoints on middle-of-life health and wellness, and delivers the content in a way that is non-judgmental, encouraging, and actionable. The Grace & Grit episodes have had a big, positive impact on my health journey so I keep tuning in.
What do you wish you knew more about?
Crypto! I am heavily in the throes of learning everything I can about cryptocurrency and decentralized finance (DeFi). I also want to learn more about how Web3 will impact traditional businesses in the future.
What was the “hinge moment” (one person, one moment, or event) that made the difference in your life?
My hinge moment was definitely the birth of my son because once we locked eyes, everything changed… it had to. I made a giant pivot from working long hours and a strict schedule in corporate America to being a stay-at-home mom.
Two years in, I started my business which provided me the freedom to be home with my son, create my own hours, and follow my passion for helping others manage their time, be more productive, and grow their business. Even if I had never become a parent, I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit and likely would have started my own business at some point, but my son’s birth was definitely the eye-opening, single event that motivated me to swing into action, build a business, and create a better life for myself and my family.Podcasts have become a significant force in modern journalism, transforming how news is reported, consumed, and understood.
